Prepare Yourself for the UAE Job Interview

Job hunting in UAE is not the same as anywhere else in the world. While particular considerations are to be given while writing a CV for a job in UAE, there are certain points to remember for the UAE job interview.

Since it is a very competitive market and there are job seekers coming from all over the world, most UAE employers are not looking for people without any experience. Be well equipped with your credentials when you are applying for a job in UAE. Before going for the interview, thoroughly research the company and the role being applied for. Be prepared to answer the most likely questions such as, “why do you want to work for this company?” and “what makes you the most suitable candidate for this job?”

A certain set of documents might be required during the interview such as originals and copies of qualifications and certificates, passport, references, marriage certificate, passport photos and may be an extra copy of the CV. Make sure all documents are notified and are in English language.

For the interview preparation, pay special attention to the dress code. Find out the cultural norms and comply with them. Even though the hiring manager might not start your interview at the scheduled time but will expect you to arrive well in time for the meeting. So, try to reach at least fifteen minutes before schedule. Greet all the people conducting the interview, have firm handshakes, smile and address them by their last names, e.g. Mr. Smith, Ms. Jones

Potential interview questions will be related to the technical know-how as well as some generic questions listed below:

  • Why do you want to work here?
  • What benefits will you bring to this company?
  • Why did you leave your previous job?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • Where do you want to be in 5 or 10 years time?

Throughout the interview, show enthusiasm and energy. Try to avoid answering in ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and instead give more details in your answer. Stress on your key qualities and how you will prove beneficial for the company. Do not bad-mouth your previous employer and do not lie about anything.

In the end, express your gratitude to the interviewers and ask for the next step. Follow up with a phone call or an email as this will show your interest in the job and the company.

Writing a CV for a Job in Dubai

Just like the application procedure for finding a job in Dubai is different from some of the other western and European countries, CV/ resume writing is also dealt differently.

CV or Resume

Generally CV and resume are considered one and the same thing in Dubai and a more common name for the document is CV.

Things to be included in the CV

Employers in Dubai consider more than your credentials or past experience at the time of hiring. Call it prejudice but, gender, ethnic group, race or nationality is going to play a major part in getting you the desired job. Include the following in your CV:

  • Photo
  • Gender
  • Nationality
  • Age
  • Marital status

Presentation of the CV

Recruiters and hiring managers in Dubai are generally impressed by what the document looks like. Do not make it very fancy but a few borders or lines, varying font sizes and bullets will do the job.

Length of the CV

A one-pager is not considered very appealing to the hiring managers. Even if you have had little experience, try to elaborate and exaggerate all you have accomplished.

Cover letter?

Not compulsory, but a short and precise cover letter will be a good idea.
